In the previous section, you practised reading and performing mathematical dialogues. This is spoken communication. In this section, you will focus on written mathematical communication. This book uses several different types of text across the chapters. This gives you exposure to a variety of mathematical writing.
The text below is a fictional extract from a call for abstracts for a fictional Undergraduate Mathematics Conference at a fictional institution. It consists of guidance sections that explain submission requirements and address common questions. Each section is designed to support students, particularly those new to academic conferences, in developing confidence and understanding how to communicate and disseminate academic mathematical work effectively.
Your task is to read the text and work through the activities. The activities have a logical structure: they begin with more global or whole-text activities, that examine the purpose and audience of the text, and they gradually narrow to a focus on individual language items. In mathematical writing, there is an inherent connection between ‘macro’ text-external elements (such as audience and purpose) and ‘micro’ text-internal aspects (such as individual words and phrases).

Activity 1: Overall audience and purpose of the text
The purpose of this activity is to help you think about three features of a text: its audience (who reads it), its purpose (why it was written), and its structure (how it is organised). Academic writing takes many different forms. Each form has its own conventions, purposes, and ways of organising information. Noticing these differences will help you become a stronger academic reader and writer.

When you submit, please indicate your preferred presentation format: either a 20-minute oral presentation plus 5 minutes for questions, or a poster presentation. Your format preference will not count towards the word limit. Please use the provided LaTeX template and submit the generated PDF file. Ensure that you write in English using UK spelling conventions.
Your abstract should include:

Noteworthy comments:
- The adjective of theme is thematic. Common adjective collocations with the noun theme are central and main. Example: the central/main theme (of the conference).
- Here the term adjacent means closely related or from a similar area of mathematical investigation. The term adjacent is frequently encountered in mathematics as a technical term. For example in trigonometry, the adjacent side of a right triangle is the side next to a given angle (but not the hypotenuse).
- The word welcome (stressed at the first syllable) is both a noun and a verb: we can say We welcome you to the event (verb) and We extend/offer a warm welcome to everyone at this event. As the second example shows, a common adjective collocation is a warm welcome (to the event).
- The phrase offers you a unique opportunity is a common phrase in language which is intended to promote an event. You will note that the match also uses the adjective unique, as there is no exact synonym for this word. Looser paraphrase might include distinctive arena and rare opportunity but these are not direct paraphrases.
- The phrase including but not limited to is a common phrase of English. You will note the paraphrase of this is a sentence. We might think of this phrase as very precise or explicit. In this sense it is similar to mathematical phrases such as if and only if or the non-negative integers meaning the integers 0, 1, 2, …
- The adjective collaborative has a person noun form as collaborator (a co-worker, someone is working with you) and an abstract noun form as collaboration. A related term is collusion (the verb is to collude). While this also means working with someone, collusion has the additional meaning of a deceitful or secret co-working arrangement.
- The spelling of the term preferred has a double ‘r’ in standard British English. Compare with opened which does not have a double ‘n’. If the stress is on the first syllable of the root word, we tend not to double the consonant (opened vs preferred).
- The phrase to situate your work appears frequently in instructions on writing tasks such as essays and reports. This phrase requires some degree of interpretation but usually means something like giving background, reasons, motivations to the mathematical work you are doing.
- The phrase additional venues refers to other places where submitted work could be presented or published. A venue is a place or platform where something happens. This relates to the concept of impact, which means making your work known to more people through different channels such as journals, conferences, websites, or media. Calls for papers often explain how work presented might reach a wider audience through these additional outlets.
- Like the above phrase, this phrase is also related to the text’s concern with promoting and disseminating work.
Activity 2: Section-by-section summary
A Call for Abstracts is a highly structured text. It is also a type of text we might skim-read fairly quickly to see if the topic, dates and format are relevant to us. It is therefore useful to have a mental structure of a Call for Papers. Activity 3: Language for offering choices
This Call for Abstracts contains many direct, unambiguous and non-negotiable instructions. However, it also offers choices and provides options for certain aspects of the conference.
For example, in the second sentence of paragraph 1, we read This year’s conference focuses on Sequences and Series, though papers related to adjacent topics are also welcome. The final words of this sentence offer a choice: presenters have the option to present on topics adjacent to sequences or series. However, what counts as an ‘adjacent topic’ is left to individual judgement.

- Choice: Although the list is implied to be comprehensive, there is still a choice here and a range of options to consider. Moreover, many of the items allow a degree of interpretation. The verb may is a hedging word, softening the instructions, making them feel more optional. The text might also use should (as in Presentations should be based on …), which is slightly stronger and more direct.
- Sentence 1: Choice. As is common in abstracts, there is a 10% tolerance either way to the 300-word limit. Sentence 2: Direct. The requirements of the style guide are stated quite directly. We might say that the term avoid allows some interpretation, however, because the sentence uses an imperative form, it reads as a direct instruction.
- Choice: A range of one, two or three presenters is possible.
- Direct: While this is polite request using Please, this is a non-negotiable requirement in terms of format and template.
- Direct: As is often the case in international academic conferences, English is the main (in this case, the only) language of the conference. The organisers require that UK or ‘British English’ spelling conventions should be used e.g. organise instead of organize.
- Direct: The structure of the submission is specified in detail and all sections must be present.
Activity 4: The language of impact
Academic conferences have many functions. They certainly offer the opportunity to travel and socialise. However, their core purpose is about knowledge creation and knowledge building. This is often a highly collaborative effort where researchers share work, discuss and develop ideas together.
In contrast to this collaborative approach, however, a conference also offers individuals the chance to present and promote their own work so that others notice it. We sometimes call this as having an impact – having your work recognised and valued by other academics.
Two parts of the text focus on the potential impact that a participant may have. The first part is the final paragraph of Section 2, reproduced below with the relevant language of impact underlined.

Activity 5: The structure of a particular paragraph
In the FAQs section, consider the paragraph which responds to the question How do I decide between a presentation and a poster? This paragraph is reproduced below for convenience.

The framework below analyses each sentence by examining:
- Structure: the framework looks both at the internal structure of each sentence and any linking words or phrases such as but, although, on the other hand that connect the sentence to what precedes or follows it.
- Purpose: the framework relates each sentence to the sentences that precede and follow it in terms of the communicative purpose.
Here is a sentence-by-sentence commentary, with comments on both structure and purpose.
Sentence 1 (S1):
- Structure: This sentence has two clauses:
- Both formats are equally valued, …
- … but they suit different types of work.
Clause a) is the ‘simple’ answer to the question in the FAQs, namely that neither format is better. Clause b) provides further information that adds more detail. The but of clause b) is a fairly weak but: it does not contrast with clause a), it instead develops the ideas of clause a).
- Purpose: S1 is a controlling sentence for the rest of the paragraph. S2 and S3 give further detail about the two different types of format mentioned in S1, while S4 consists of advice on how to make the choice between them.
Sentence 2:
- Structure: This sentence contains two main ideas: it first characterises work that might work best in the presentation format, and then provides an example. This two-part structured might be bracketed in the following way:
[ Presentations work best for work that is more developed, substantive, and requires sustained explanation or theoretical depth ] , [ for example, a complete investigation with methodology, findings, and implications. ]
This bracketing shows that the material beginning with for example, … is an optional addition. In fact, this material could form a separate sentence and be rewritten as An example of this is a complete investigation …
- Purpose: This sentence characterises work that may be best presented in presentation format, and to give an example of such work. That characterisation comes first, followed by the example. A reasonable expectation for the following sentence is either further material on what might work best for a presentation, or (as in the text), a similar sentence on what kind of work might best fit the poster format.
Sentence 3:
- Structure: This sentence is structurally parallel to S2, as it characterises what type of work is appropriate for the poster format and what it might look like. It does not include an example. Like S2, it characterises the type of work in three ways:
S2: work which is: (a) more developed, (b) substantive, and (c) requires sustained explanation or theoretical depth
S3: work which is: (a) exploratory, (b) preliminary, or (c) demonstrates a specific concept or application
- Purpose: As has already been stated, this sentence echoes the previous sentence in terms of purpose.
Sentence 4:
- Structure: This sentence has multiple clauses and it is divided by a colon. Its structure might be bracketed in the following way: [ Consider the maturity and scope of your work: ] { [ if it represents significant engagement with a topic, choose a presentation, ] [ whereas if it is more focused or exploratory, a poster may be more appropriate. ] } We note that there is a pre-colon controlling clause, followed by a pair of clauses after the colon which contrast each other (linked by whereas). Both parts after the colon use if-structures.
- Purpose: This sentence gives advice for potential contributors. It concludes the paragraph well because it offers practical advice based on the distinctions made in the previous sentences.

Sentence 1 (S1):
- Structure: A contrast sentence stating that content, rigour, and originality are more important than English language proficiency.
- Purpose: This opening sentence provides the central answer to the question. S2 then begins with However, … and provides a limitation to the principle in S1.
Sentence 2:
- Structure and Purpose: As noted above, S2 begins with the linker However, … which signals a contrast with S1. Specifically, it clarifies that English language proficiency should still reach a certain standard.
Sentence 3:
- Structure: The two clauses of this sentence are linked with so that which tells us why the first part is important. Clause 1 gives the guidance and clause 2 gives the reason.
- Purpose: S3 looks back to S2 by explaining why clarity of language matters. It also looks forward to S4 which will describe how to achieve clear language.
Sentence 4:
- Structure: This short sentence gives advice on how to write, using the verb encourage.
- Purpose: This sentence continues the guidance in S2 and S3. Together, S2, S3, and S4, form a series of advice on how to write clearly.
Sentence 5:
- Structure: This sentence has an if-then structure. Note the comma that closes the if-clause.
- Purpose: This sentence supports submitters who are concerned about their level of English. It continues to answer the question about the relative importance of the mathematics and the English language in submissions. Specifically, it tells the students that the Conference committee can help with the language.
Sentence 6:
- Structure: This final sentence also has an if-then structure. If you compare it to S5, you will note that the order of the two clauses is different: in S6 the if-clause comes second, and there is no comma between them.
- Purpose: This sentence concludes the series of advice for people who have concerns about their English language level. It tells them how to request language support.

Language Focus
One of the terms you identified in the previous activity was ensure. Let’s look at this verb in greater detail, alongside two other verbs with similar spelling and pronunciation, insure and assure.
- To ensure is a more formal version of to make sure. For example, we might say Please ensure you arrive on time or Please make sure that you arrive on time.
- The verb insure relates to the noun insurance, which is a financial product and is part of financial mathematics. Many people take out insurance, such as car insurance, to protect themselves against undesirable circumstances. We pay premiums on our insurance policies and the cost of these premiums is calculated mathematically.
- To assure means to make someone feel certain about something. For example, we might say Please let me assure you that your exam has been marked and that the mark will be returned to you shortly. This means I want you to feel sure that your exam has been marked. The noun form is assurance. We also have the verb reassure with a similar meaning.
Activity 7: Generalising academic language
In the FAQs section you have encountered the following sentence: Your abstract should be as clear as possible so that the reviewers and the audience understand your mathematical ideas.
This can be broken down in the following way:

This basic structure can be used to generate many different sentences. We consider three variations on the structure.
Variation 1: variations on possible. The following alternatives to possible are available:
- as clear as you can
- as clear as the example
- as clear as is required
Variation 2: verb + [as Adjective as + possible] → verb + [as Adverb as + possible (or variations)]:
- to write + as clearly as you can
- to respond + as soon as is required (soon is an adverb even though it does not end in -ly)
- to present + as closely as possible to December 2nd
Variation 3: the linker and all subsequent material can also be varied:
- to write as clearly as you can so as to allow easily readability
- to respond as soon as is required because of the approaching deadline
- to follow the example as closely as possible as this will prevent unnecessary mistakes
