2 The Evolution of Human Freedom and the Path to Prosperity

When we reflect on human life through the lens of economic development, social issues, and transformative advancements, a pivotal moment emerges. Today’s world is defined by the widespread presence of technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and significant medical breakthroughs, among various other innovations. The combination of these technological and medical advancements significantly enhances our living standards and aids in our pursuit of a longer, higher-quality life.

Central to these profound changes is the concept of human freedom. Throughout history, progress in the economic, social, and technological realms has been closely linked to the evolution of human freedom. A key attribute distinguishing humans from other animals is our ability to achieve true freedom. This includes living in peace, free from fear, and having the freedom to explore new ideas, think independently, and express our thoughts freely. Such freedom fuels creativity, innovation, and increased productivity in society.

The historical record demonstrates that nations, irrespective of their natural resource wealth, can achieve high living standards by fostering environments characterised by true freedom. This is a powerful assertion that holds true even today. A nation that invests in resources beyond mere natural wealth by promoting true democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and free speech can flourish and prosper.

In establishing the groundwork for this book, the goal is to embark on a historical exploration of our origins, understanding where we have come from, and considering the trajectory of our collective journey. This foundational discussion sets the stage for a detailed exploration of various economic subjects, all of which are highlighted by the central argument that human freedom is the foundation of progress, innovation, and prosperity.

It has been known for a long time that missionaries of every religion open schools in foreign countries. There are many examples of this from both the West and the East. Instead of these schools trying to gain supporters for their spiritual claims or imposing their language and religion on others, if they had transferred the core values of a culture of living together, as discussed in this book, to the societies they entered, they could have raised generations who were advocates of these values and principles. These generations, fighting for human rights, supporting freedom, and standing for democracy, would have played a significant role in making the places they lived more liveable through the decisions they made. In a world that is liveable for everyone, no one would feel the need to leave their homeland, risking their lives on the roads, crossing borders in the hands of cartels, searching for a better life.
