19 Authoring a content script

At Leeds, we use a dedicated Content Script that enables authors and learning designers to work together. This document supports the development of separate video scripts, and specifies interactive elements designed to support learning.

We highly recommend that you use a standard script to capture the learning materials and to review the flow of the course before attempting to develop content on the hosting platform. Using this approach, you can enable collaboration between subject-matter experts, who will be able to bring the expertise on a topic, and learning designers, who can help to optimise it for the online environment.

These groups can work together to ensure that the detailed design follows your planned structure, and that the final course will be an active, engaging and inclusive learning experience that all learners can access.

It’s far easier to make edits and changes and manage version control at this stage using the Word document format of a script, than to make amends after the course is built on the hosting platform.

Appendix 5: Content Script provides an example of the document used at Leeds. This is developed during the collaborative process, which you may wish to adapt for your project.
