27 Designing interactive learning assets
Interactive elements can enhance your course and have the benefit of enabling learners to check what they have learnt and gain feedback. Learning technologists or graphic designers at your institution may be able to suggest ways in which exercises that work well in the classroom can be translated to the online environment. However, some hosting platforms have restrictions on the integration of external content, as interactive exercises may take learners away from the course to another site if the hosting platform lacks the necessary in-built functionality.
We recommend that interactive assets should be used sparingly as they can disrupt the learning journey if learners must often go ‘off-platform’ to access them.
Learning technologists can help you to design and build interactive exercises so that they are fully accessible, work on all devices and are available globally. If this isn’t possible, they can work with you to design an accessible alternative that provides all learners with an equivalent experience.
