41 Next Steps
If, after having read this document, you would like to further explore the process of creating an Open course, your first step should be to discuss your plans with the relevant teams at your institution. They can guide you through the process of gathering your initial requirements and shaping a proposal that has the best chance of being approved.
It is worth noting that your support teams will have limited capacity and competing demands on their time. At Leeds, we manage this potential conflict by assessing the value of any proposed project.
At Leeds, we have found that courses that have the best chance of success are those that:
- meet a strategic need, either of your school or faculty, or the wider strategy of your institution,
- have a broad appeal,
align with your institution’s principles. At Leeds this means courses that offer experiential learning, co-creation, authentic and inclusive assessment, surfacing skills and developing capabilities, and participatory (‘active’) learning.
