62 Appendix 6: About facilitator training
The Social Justice Jam: Spaces for Change event was a challenge-based learning experience in which a real-world scenario was used as a learning trigger. Participants were asked to identify specific propositions to be considered by two communities.
What were the facilitation requirements? | We sought staff and student facilitators with an interest in both social justice and working online to support diverse groups of learners during the Jam. Facilitators helped lead participants to the co-creation of a successful output.
We had an open call for students and a selection process based on the responses students provided to questions linked to the Jam. |
Who were the facilitators? | We invited staff and students from the two partner institutions. |
How did we support facilitators in preparation for the event? | We provided information about how we would like them to help with facilitation of the Jam. This involved facilitating diverse learning groups and we prepared and shared a Jam handbook with facilitators in advance of the event. |
What resources helped? Were these Open Educational Resources (OERs) for wider sharing? Could we have used resources already available? | We created and made available a set of resources under an open licence to enable reuse and repurposing. |
Was a workshop or a series of workshops be useful? How long were they? Were there any reusable materials? | We organised two separate two-hour workshops to provide opportunities for flexible engagement. We created new resources specifically for the Jam. |
How were facilitators kept ‘warm’ in advance of the event? | Drop-in sessions were organised after the facilitation workshop to continue the development of professional relationships, help build confidence and strengthen competencies. |
How were facilitators supported during the event? | We provided a private backstage Teams channel for facilitators. This was used throughout the Jam to troubleshoot issues, support peers and ensure smooth running of the Jam. |
How did you evaluate the facilitators’ experiences? | Facilitators were given the opportunity to share their reflections during the Jam via a private Teams channel. Together with participants, facilitators were invited to complete a survey at the end of the Jam. |
How did you provide certification of the facilitators’ involvement in the Jam? | We created and issued certificates for staff and students completing the facilitator training. These were signed by the Jam organisers. |
