3 About the Jam
The Social Justice Jam: Spaces for Change took place online over three days, from 10-12 June 2024. It was a cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural event dedicated to finding solutions to real-world challenges.
The Jam focused on challenges related to community space access, and management and solutions that enable communities to reap benefits in terms of learning, growth and connectivity.
This event was organised by the University of Leeds in collaboration with the University of Pretoria in South Africa, and in partnership with LS14 Trust, a community-based organisation in Leeds and Mothong African Heritage, a community-based organisation in Pretoria, South Africa.
The aim of the Jam was to provide solutions to challenges faced by two communities: Seacroft in Leeds, UK, and Mamelodi in Pretoria, South Africa. Both communities presented a scenario detailing the current social justice challenges they face. Jam participants are then invited to discuss, investigate and propose potential solutions to each community’s challenges.
The Jam offered an opportunity for participants to work collaboratively, share their views and exchange ideas that form solutions to the identified social justice issues. There were also opportunities to work with others in small groups and engage in live interactive sessions with other participants, as well as learning independently. Group membership was diverse, facilitating an enriching, active learning experience.
Whether you were a student or member of staff from the University of Leeds or University of Pretoria, or a community member from Mamelodi or Seacroft, the Jam offered you the opportunity to think creatively, co-design solutions, and build local and global connections. Participants received official recognition of their participation, co-signed by the Universities of Leeds and Pretoria.
