56 Multiple facilitators and facilitation roles

If you are facilitating a group of learners with others, it will be good to agree in advance how you as facilitators will support your group to secure a smooth facilitation and help learners feel supported.

If it is a small group, be mindful not to overwhelm learners and communicate to them clearly at the outset what your roles will be.

If it was originally anticipated that you would be facilitating a larger group and you are more facilitators than needed, consider discussing how some of you could be participants. For example 2 to 3 could work for a group with about 10 members.

Meet in advance of the event/course with your co-facilitators

  • to get to know each other and
  • agree who will do what, when and how and how you will co-ordinate activities.

The following table may help you get organised. Please consider using/adapting it for your needs. For example, one of you could start the meetings in the group every day, another could arrange an ice-braker activity on Day and then recap the discussions at the start of each day. Another could be taking notes from the discussions or directing participants to resources, etc
