14 Top tips

When designing scenarios, consider the following (Dolmans et al, 1997; Stanton, M. and McCaffrey, M., 2011; Azer et al., 2012):

Prioritise learning

  • Define learning outcomes and relate the scenario to these.
  • Think about the core concepts you want your learners to draw from this scenario. How you will know what they will have learnt?

Consider your learners

  • Consider your learners’ needs.
  • Think about diverse learners and how you can be inclusive using a variety of media.

Select an appropriate case

  • The scenario needs to include a level of complexity. But don’t overdo it!
  • Be authentic so that learners can relate to the scenario, activate their existing knowledge, and feel curious about it.

Develop for learning

  • Scaffold input progressively, and avoid providing all the information necessary.
  • Think about how learners will actively engage with the scenario.

Review and improve

  • Collaborate with others.
  • Provide the facilitators with information about the scenario.
  • Evaluate and review your scenario.
